Park Circle and Mount Pleasant, the neighborhoods around our homes

One home sits a few blocks from North Charleston’s circle. Two sit in Mount Pleasant, between Shem Creek and the beaches. Here is what is within reach of each.

Park Circle, North Charleston

In 1912, landscape architect William Bell Marquis drew a neighborhood around a round central park, with avenues running out from it like spokes. Lots went on sale in 1915 as Pinewood Park. The companies behind it failed, but the circle survived, and so did the avenue names: Montague, Durant, Buist, Rhett and O’Hear.

Today it is a walkable mix of older and newer houses under big oaks, with a restaurant street on East Montague Avenue. North Charleston became a city in 1972.

Inside the circle

The city rebuilt the park at the center of the circle and reopened it in November 2023. It is a 2-minute drive from the Park Circle Charmer.

Mount Pleasant, across the Cooper River

Mount Pleasant sits east of downtown Charleston, across the Ravenel Bridge. Its Old Village was laid out by James Hibben in 1803. Shem Creek, where shrimp boats still dock, has been the town’s working harbor for more than 300 years.

Both of our Mount Pleasant homes sit in quiet residential streets, 5 to 6 minutes from Shem Creek and 8 to 12 minutes from the public beach paths of Sullivan’s Island.
